It’s sad I even have to write a blog on this but in reality, it’s a serious problem. I have had people give me dirty looks unnecessarily. The reason they do this that they are curious about my disability. Giving me a dirty look is rude. If you are curious about my disability just, ask. But don’t do so in a rude or mocking way, because if you do that chances are I will tell you it’s none of your business.
I don’t mind educating people about my disability, but when people are rude about that irritates. Treat a person with a disability like you would an abled person. Like I have said before, the only difference between the two is a person with a disability have bodies that work differently.
Most disabled people get offended or just angry if you give them a dirty look for no reason. Treating them differently is wrong. If a disabled person gave you a dirty look for no reason you wouldn’t like it. You would probably be mad and confused why a stranger was giving you dirty looks. Why should it be okay if an abled person does it?
Another thing that can be viewed as rude is staring at a disabled person. Abled people stare also because they are curious. To be honest, I would rather have you ask questions than have you sit and stare at me because that is rude. That is one thing if you are unintentionally doing it but it is totally different if you are staring because you are avoiding conversation. Whenever I notice someone is staring at me I go up to them because it really irritates me. Some people will never go up to you. They will just stare, so unless you take action you will continue to have this problem. If you are disabled and have this problem with staring go up to them first. Some people just need a person with a disability to educate them, then they will realize we are just regular people. Disabled people won’t bite. There is nothing to be afraid of.
The bottom line is giving people dirty looks for no reason is going to make people mad. Unless you have a genuine reason for giving them a dirty look don’t do it. Abled people do it to the disabled so much that it has gotten to a point we ignore it. It shouldn’t be that way. People shouldn’t do it period. If you are curious about someone’s disability, just ask. The worst thing that can happen is they won’t tell you. The most important thing is to refrain from asking anything that would be super personal. Chances are they wouldn’t tell you anyways. If you have any questions about why you should not give a disabled person dirty looks please leave them in the comments below.
