When you have a disability, you are limited to things you can do with your friends. People with disabilities can do a lot of the same things abled people can but they may require some assistance with certain tasks. There are some activities that a person with a disability may not be able to do with their friends that an abled person can. I will show you some of the things I do with my friends when we hang out.
Shopping- Whether you are in a wheelchair or walk with crutches chances are you are able to go shopping. When I go shopping with my friends I bring my wheelchair because I am unable to walk long distances. Anybody that walks with crutches probably owns a wheelchair and most likely does the same thing.
Sleepovers- I love sleepovers! Because of my disability, I don’t get to see my friends very often and when we do have a sleepover it gives us a chance to catch up!
Lunch/Coffee- If you don’t have much time, but you want to see your friends you could meet at a Panera or Starbucks and chat for an hour or two. That way you can still see your friends even if it’s just for a short period of time.
Skype- Due to my disability, I am unable to drive and because of that sometimes I can go a year without seeing my friends. It is not because I am avoiding them it’s because I am unable to drive and for me to hang out I have to coordinate my schedule with whoever is driving me and that can be difficult. I also have to check to see when my friend is available. An abled person would only have to see when their friend is available. I have to check with two people, that is why I don’t get to hang out very often.
Phone calls/texts- There are times I don’t have time for Skype but want to have a quick conversation with one of my friends. Calling or texting is a great way to have a quick conversation when you are limited on time.
Crafts- Have you ever gotten bored when you have gone over to a friend’s house? Traditional activities like movies and chatting can get old. If the weather does not permit going for a walk will not be an option. What do you do? Get creative! Find a fun craft that you and your friend would both enjoy and do it together.
Go for a walk- When you are over at someone’s house sitting inside all day can get kind of boring. If the weather permits why not go for a walk and get some fresh air. You will be able to have some alone time with your friend and catch up!
Even though you are limited to some things there are still plenty of things you can do with your friends. If you are disabled and get depressed about all the things you can’t do with your friends you need to think about it differently. You need to focus on all the things you can do and stop dwelling on all the things you can’t. If you do that no one will want to be around you. If you have any questions about fun things you can do with your friends while your disabled please leave them in the comments below!
