How do you take care of your mental health?

Mental health is just as important as physical health. Failure to take care of your mental health puts you at risk for mental health conditions that could have been avoided. How do you take care of your mental health? Here are some ways to take care of your mental health so you can avoid any preventable health conditions.

Challenge your mind- Sometimes we have the tendency to not do things that are challenging but those things are so good for maintaining your mental health. In can be as simple as doing a challenging puzzle every once in a while. If you work out trying something new every once in a while is so beneficial for your mental health as well as your physical health. Every four weeks I totally change my work out routine and do something totally different to not only keep my body challenged but also my mind challenged. Challenging your mind during exercise does not have to be complicated it can be as simple as taking a different exercise class or taking a different route if you walk or run.

Volunteer- I have volunteered at a hospital and the high school I went to! There are a lot of benefits to volunteering if you have time for it. Volunteering can reduce stress, help you find friends and give you the ability to help those that are less fortunate than you. If you can help those that are less fortunate than you a lot of the time you become more grateful for just the little things. When I volunteered I made some friends so if making friends has been a real struggle for you try volunteering if you can!

Meditate- The traditional way of meditation is not for everybody that is okay. Try it first before you decide meditation it is not for you! Meditation has lots of health benefits it reduces stress and improves concentration are just a few benefits of meditation. If the traditional way of meditation is not for you then do something you find meditative, maybe it’s reading your favorite book or getting a massage. Everybody is different whatever relaxes you that is your meditation!

Avoid self-criticism We tend to be very hard on ourselves, but if you want to improve your mental health you need to stop talking about yourself in a negative way. If that is really difficult for you come up with positive mantra’s and say them every day to incorporate positivity into your everyday life. If you are always putting yourself down, you will become very unhappy that is why it is very important to incorporate positivity into your life. Nobody wants to be with somebody who is always negative.

Get help when you need it- Are you suffering from severe depression that your friends and family can’t help you with? Get help from an expert! A lot of the time if you are disabled you become depressed but if it’s severe don’t be embarrassed to get help. No one is judging you, they will probably be proud of you for getting help!

Sleep- If you are in college you may have pulled a couple of all-nighters which is okay to do every once in a while. Just don’t make a habit of it because sleep deprivation not only puts a toll on your physical health but your mental as well.

Sometimes we get busy with a lot of things and our mental health starts to lack. It is very important that you try to make it as much of a priority as you would your physical health. Nobody wants to get any mental health conditions if it was an avoidable problem! Do yourself a favor and take care of your mental health!
