Body confidence with a disability

 

Summer is just around the corner and most people may be doing extra workouts to get that “summer body”. People with physical disabilities may struggle with body confidence because most people with physical disabilities can’t workout like an abled person and some can’t workout at all! Having body confidence is more challenging with a physical disability so if you are struggling here are a few tips that may help.

Stop obsessing- Do you look in the mirror every five minutes and body shame yourself? If you do you should stop because that is not going to help you gain confidence in your body! Your mind will believe whatever you want it to so stop filling it with negativity. Instead, do the opposite and give yourself a compliment!

Comparing yourself to abled people- Sometimes when a person with a physical disability sees an abled person workout they get depressed because they can accomplish so much more. Comparing yourself to an abled person is not even an accurate comparison and doing so will cause you to become very insecure. Instead of comparing yourself to an abled person make your own goals and crush them!

Wear clothes you feel confident in- There may be some things about ourselves that are feeding into our insecurities. Wearing an outfit that you feel insecure about is not going to help with gaining confidence in your body. So you can avoid negative self-talk stop wearing outfits you don’t feel secure in!

Avoid negative self-talk- Talking about yourself in a negative way has a huge impact on how you feel about yourself. If you are constantly telling yourself you are a failure you will start to believe it! Instead of filling your mind with negativity fill your mind with positive affirmations.

Unfollow fitness experts– If you are disabled and are unable to workout following fitness experts may make you sad. They will constantly be making posts about workouts that you will be unable to do and make it difficult for you to have confidence in your body. Unfollowing fitness experts will make it easier to gain confidence in your body! If you have limited mobility following every fitness channel you can think of is probably not very smart because some of them you will not be able to do. Instead of following every fitness channel you can think of only follow the ones that have workouts that you are able to do!

How is beauty measured?– Beauty is not defined by the number on the scale but is within you. There is nothing wrong with setting weight loss goals but that does not define your beauty.

When you are disabled it can be very difficult to have body confidence! You may not be able to change the way you look but unplugging from social media every once and while may help. Sometimes we have a tendency to compare our lives to somebody else’s and that causes us to feel worse about ourselves and makes it difficult to have confidence in our own body.
